Barbados a World Apart
Published in Hardcover by Imagenes Press (October, 1995)
Average review score:

Excellent touching photo essayThis is an excellent text and touching text which adequately captures the essence of Barbados past present and its future in the global economy. As a Bajan I was impressed that in the choice of topics as opposed to the usual postcard presentation. Well and tastefully done.
Nice photosThe photography in this book is beautiful, and the text is well written. Rather than buing this before your next trip to Barbados, I'd recommend a simple travel guide instead. You may want to buy this book later for your coffee table for when you are feeling nostalgic for the warm air and white beaches.
Stunning! This stunning book reflects pure professionalism and attention to detail as well as a love and devotion to the island and people of Barbados. The more than 155 photographs are simply magnificent. There are aerial shots of pristine, remote regions of the island and startling close-ups of both plants and wildlife. Then there are the photos of the bustling, tiny "metropolis" of Bridgetown, and, of course, the gorgeous tourist resorts. Last but not least are the stars of the book -- the people of Barbados, in their great variety of personality, background, and station in life. An added feature is a substantial amount of historical material that accompanies the photos, thereby providing virtually two books in one. Certainly this work is both an enticement to visit Barbados and a happy reminder of past visits.

Gateway to Barbados (Gateway to the Caribbean)

Gateway to Barbados - 10 hefty tomes in one little CD-RomGone are the days of ploughing through endless brochures and guides in order to plan a holiday to Barbados. This wonderful CD includes everything the holiday-maker ever wanted to know about the island - from background information, attractions, history and culture to hotels, villas, restaurants, car hire, shopping and sports. And it's so easy to use - its intuitive search facility enables you to find out exactly what you need to know at the click of a mouse.
Moreover, the video clips enable you to literally take a step inside the hotel rooms you are considering, and you feel you're on holiday before you even get here thanks to the steel pan music in the background.
A frequent visitor to Barbados, I thought I knew all there was to know. But the beauty and accuracy of this CD still stunned me.
Vacation planning made easy. When planning our trip to Barbados, and having never vacationed on the island before, we wanted to find an all encompassing travel guide to help in our decision making. Much to our delight, we found Gateway to Barbados. Instantly we were wisked off to the island via the exceptional video footage, still images and the traditional Caribbean steel pan background music. The Hotel and Villa sections are incredibly comprehensive, and gave us an excellent idea of where exactly we wanted to stay during our vacation. We decided on a lovely Villa on the West Coast of the island, and were delighted to find that the Villa was every bit as beautiful as portrayed. The guide was invaluable when planning our activities and picking restaurants. This is the first time we were able to find such a comprehensive guide to aid us in our holiday planning. Gateway to Barbados is 100 travel guides in one. If your planning to visit the island, than Gateway to Barbados should be your first stop.
A unique, entertaining and fascinating guide to Barbados.Having been to Barbados several times, I was quite skeptical of my need for a travel guide when a friend loaned me her copy of the CD-ROM Gateway to Barbados. Immediately I fell in love with it. The steel pan music put me in the holiday mode before I left home. I found the section on the Villas of particular interest. There are movie clips of about 100 privately owned luxury villas that you can rent. I had no idea how beautiful many of the island homes were. The guide showed us through the hotel we had booked to stay in, a far more accurate representation than just a photograph. The section on sights was also useful to us. We were able to plan ahead the things we wanted to do. Not once were we disappointed in the information we got from Gateway to Barbados. I wish more travel guides were as much fun to use. I would recommend this to anyone planning a holiday in Barbados and even for those who aren't. Everything is covered, from airlines and car rentals to festivals, restaurants, hotels and anything a tourist could want to know about. Now that we are back from our vacation we use it to show friends where we were and what we did!

Frommer's Jamaica & Barbados (3rd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Outstanding guide."Frommer's Jamaica & Barbados" is an outstanding guide to the finest (and most affortable) shops, sites, hotels, and restaurants on the two islands. Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince also give us candid, in-depth "Best Of's" at the beginning of the book. If, for instance, you're an avid tennis player, the Best Tennis Facility in Barbados is at the Sandy Lane Hotel. And one of the Best Honeymoon Resorts is, ironically, Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Other fine sections include: "Fast Facts: Jamaica/Barbados," "Calendar of Events," and "Planning a Trip to Jamaica/Barbados." The authors do a first-rate job of giving you the low-down on Jamaica without scarring you off ("There's no denying that it's plagued by crime and drugs...But many visitors are unaffected; they are escourted from the airport to their hotel grounds and venture out only on...organized tours"). If you're planning a trip to either of these two lovely islands, don't plan it without the aid of this top-notch guidebook.
Frommer's Jamaica and Barbados (2nd ed.) was user friendly. The 2nd edition of this travel guide was useful, informative and well read when we travelled to Jamaica in 1994. We are planning on going back and will be purchasing Frommer's Guide to Jamaica and Barbados (3rd ed.). The guide was well segmented and easy to use. Reviews were right on and the extremely accurate price guides helped us plan for everything.
The historical information made for interesting reading and the people and local culture were exactly as described! This is a well done and very user-friendly travel guide. It's also a bargain at Amazon.com!

inspirationi know this is a kids book, and i read it a few years ago, but every once in a while i get it out and read it from cover to cover again. every time i read this book i get inspired about life. does that seem a little drastic? i love this book. it's like my security blanket. read this book!
Jack's New Power : Stories From A Caribbean YearWhat a truly great book. I read this when I was in 4th grade. It has a beautiful mix of comedy and just plain interesting writing. It's the best book that I've ever read in my entire life. I also own my own copy of it. I would automatically recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh. This is a great book for all ages. I would also like to recommend "Heads Or Tails" which is also in the same series. I am also currently reading the third book in the series, "Jack's Black Book". It's great. Everyone should go out and buy copies of all three books and read them.

Pig Tails 'n Breadfruit: A Culinary Memoir
Published in Hardcover by New Press (April, 2000)
Average review score:

Visit beautiful Barbados....This delightful book evokes the language and spirit of Barbados. The author weaves in tales of growing up in Barbados with memories of the food, 'hot cuisine', that fashioned his childhood. For anyone who has visited the island, this will surely bring back fond and enticing memories. Read the book, visit Barbados!
Descriptions of preparing dishes, lovingly detailed. This culinary memoir of the author's childhood in Barbados describes his early introduction to cooking, his involvement with native dishes, and his progress in becoming a cook. Don't look for recipes here; it's more a memoir and biography of Barbados cooking, though descriptions of preparing dishes are lovingly detailed and rival James Beard's American presentations.

Ancestors

(Re)Invention of an InventionAncestors is a "must' read for scholars and critics of Caribbean literature and poetry. Brathwaite (re)invents an invention - a technique that must be recognized as his signature. He is clearly "the" unique voice in the Anglophone Caribbean Literary Canon. My book, The Critical Response to Kamau Brathwaite, which will be published by Greenwood Press in 2003, will further demonstrate his artistry from the 1960s to the present.

Barbados Sun Sea Superb

Wow!In a word, Wow! This is a superb "portrait" of this island. The photographs are absolutely stunning. But this isn't just a "postcard" view of Barbados -- there's lots of coverage of the people, history, and culture, too. The author-photographer has been traveling to Barbados for over two decades, and it shows both in his photographs and his extensive text, which gives a solid but concise presentation of Barbados' history in a very readable way without being dry. (Kind of National Geographic style.) And the picture captions are in-depth, presenting little gems of info about the picture subject matter if you're in too much of hurry to read the whole text. I've lived in Barbados, and this has the feel of an insider's view, not just someone who has breezed through the island and shot a few pictures.

Caribbee

Storyline ....Since Amazon didn't provide an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this story is for you: "In the bestselling tradition of James Michener and James Clavell -- a magnificent saga of slavery, piracy, and revolution ... Barbados, 1648. The lush and deadly Caribbean paradise, domain of rebels and freeholders, of brigands, bawds and buccaneers. Where the flames of revolution exploded a full 130 years before engulfing the American mainland. And where a dark, enslaved race secretly practiced the mysterious religious rites of a distant continent while daring to whisper the forbidden word ... "Freedom" The sweeping tale of Hugh Winston, lusty, swashbuckling captain of The Defiance, and the lovely, tempestuous firebrand Katherine Bedford; two lovers trapped in a bloody pitched battle against the overwhelming forces of British tyranny. A story of love and betrayal, of slavery, war, and piracy in the exotic land that gave birth to the fiery American ideal of "Liberty or Death"

Song of Night - Insightful!Cyan (also known as Night) grew up in a small seaside village on the island of Barbados with her father, mother and sister. At a very early stage in her life, she is faced with some very unsettling events that re-arranges the family structure and in the process, Cyan is forced to make decisions and deal with issues seemingly far beyond her years. Her character becomes strong-willed and very independent in her thinking and actions. The book is set in Barbados, and has a unique Caribbean flavor - the story is fascinating, that seems to unmistakably transcends the people, culture and politics of the island. It's a cleverly written story that to me reflects the circle of life, decisions and resulting consequences. Song of Night captures this and more! Another excellent read by Glenville Lovell!
Sassy CyanMr. Lovell brings out the real life of a young girl growing up in beautiful Barbados. I felt as thought I knew Cyan personally, she was sassy and real during all of her traumatic adventures. All of the characters were phenomenal. This book made me a laugh and it made me cry. Mr. Lovell also did an excellent job in presenting the facts about Barbados and its problems. I'm waiting for a sequel.

Desire in the Sun (Thorndike Large Print Romance Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (October, 1997)

This book is hot!out of all the books I have read by Karen Robards, this must be one of the best. The plot was an intricate one, weaved around a handsome rake with a chip on his shoulder, a beautiful lady who has a temper, isolated beaches and a tempestuous love on the sunny island of Barbados...What more could you want, really?
Definitely Desirable! My 4th by Karen Robards, and so far, definitely one of the best! I couldn't put it down - The main characters were very interesting and the story was fast-paced, action-packed, compelling and in no way predictable. If you like Karen Robards, you will NOT be dissapointed! READ IT!
A historical page turnerI have read all of Karen Robards' books and of her historical romances Desire in the Sun is the cream of the crop. The characters are believeable and react to problems appropretly. Leila is young and she acts like a young woman without the benifit of worldly experience. Joss is one of Robards best male characters he has a reason to hate Leila but he still has the capacity to love her.
